← Coffee & Chat with Johnathon Fife, Junior Years Teacher

  • What do you do in your role? I am a Junior Years Teacher, meaning I teach just about everything!
  • What was your first job? In my first job I worked for Surf Life Saving Queensland as the State Membership Development Officer.
  • How long have you worked? I have been working in full-time employment for approximately 11 years.
  • What’s the most rewarding part of your job? When I see students challenge themselves and accomplish tasks they thought were too difficult to complete in the first place.
  • What are some of your notable previous employers and roles? Working for Surf Life Saving Queensland as the State Membership Development officer required me to travel around Australia and deliver Surf Education Talks to primary schools. I have traveled out West as far as Alice Springs and as far North as Coen (tip of Australia). I also assisted in the development and implementation of Nipper program resources in Surf Clubs across Queensland. Interacting with and teaching children has always been a passion of mine.
  • What is your educational background? I have completed numerous qualifications and courses including Cert. IV in Training & Assessment, Diploma of Management and Bachelor of Teaching.
  • What specialised skills, knowledge and/or talents do you use in your work? I have a background in musical theatre and acting. I have been in many productions on the Gold Coast. I love to use drama and acting in the classroom to help develop students’ confidence and public speaking skills, and overall to have fun.
  • What are your most notable work-related achievements and/or awards received? Just recently I appeared in Griffith University’s promotional videos for their new Education Program. Griffith spent a day with me conducting many interviews about my teaching practices in and out of the classroom.
  • What are your interests/hobbies outside of work? Outside of work you will find me at Broadbeach Surf Life Saving Club patrolling the beach or competing in Inflatable Rescue Boat racing. I love keeping fit and competing in Surf Life Saving events. My most notable accomplishment would have to be competing in the Coolangatta Gold, which is an Ironman race from Coolangatta Beach ski paddling to Miami via Broadbeach, run to Burleigh, swim to North Burleigh and back, board paddle to Currumbin, run and finish at Coolangatta; a total of approximately 42km. Gruelling but FUN!
  • Where were you born? Born and bred on the Gold Coast.
  • What is your favourite colour? Black. I know it is a shade but black always looks stylish. I do, however, have a soft spot for Stephan Blue.
  • What is your favourite song? ‘Hey Jealousy’ by Gin Blossoms
  • What is your favourite cuisine? Have to say Italian and Mexican.
  • When have you been most satisfied in your life? Finally graduating from university and receiving my degree for teaching.
  • Who is your role model, and why? My parents are my role models. They have put others before themselves all their lives, without asking anything in return. They worked tirelessly to provide my brother and sisters and I with a good education and upbringing, and have supported me in everything I have done.

As mentioned before, I am also involved in many theatre companies, performing in local musicals and plays. Some musicals I have been in include Les Miserables, Footloose, West Side Story, Grease, Bonnie and Clyde and Leader of the Pack.
