Hearing that we have had the hottest March on record during the nightly weather report came as no surprise. This was soon followed by an additional news item stating that we have had the hottest start to April since record keeping began. Of course no one was complaining down at the beach during the holidays. As the school term begins once again there is no doubt that the issue of global warming or climate change will be a topic for some class project during the year. Such a debate will include an evaluation of the collected data as well as hearing the skeptics who see yet another agenda behind the same data. That’s what makes for an interesting discussion.
Interestingly, a new phenomenon is becoming increasingly more popular in the public arena and it is being promoted by the politically correct lobby groups. This phenomenon aims to stifle and silence debate, rather than promote hearing the other person’s point of view. The sad side effect is the stifling of discussion, when such debate would previously have contributed to a healthy democracy, and Is now replace with ‘approved’ opinions. The heat is on! Are we seeing a 'climate change' of public opinion?
Consider that even in the pages of scripture we are encouraged to test, research, and form our own opinions. As an example: "Friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God. For there are many false prophets in the world.” (1 John 4:1 NLT). So be diligent in the pursuit of truth and don’t shy away from healthy debate. That’s the process of education and learning. After all, truth will shine through, but our egos will be shown up as shadows of falsehood.
