In the last editions of Spirit we discussed the Picture Book and Younger Reader Categories for the Children’s Book Council Book of the Year Awards. Now, the Early Childhood category which includes books for pre-readers and early readers. Collectively, these three of six categories are those our students investigate more closely (as appropriate) during the term.
Books in this category most often are picture books or picture storybooks. The intended audience is usually students in the Kindergarten and early Junior Years. The best, have a wonderful unity between pictures and words and although the intended audience is the very young; they can be appreciated by all ages. This year included a wide range from the light-hearted work by Aaron Blabey to a more serious but wonderfully presented book exploring themes of mindset and mood by Anna Walker.

The winners and honour books in each category are announced to launch Book Week each year. Students have engaged in their own lively literary discussions about preferences, likes and dislikes.
