← Australia: Story Country Book Week celebrations

Throughout Term 3 we have enjoyed a wonderful celebration of literature culminating with special Book Week and Literacy and Numeracy Week events.

During the term students have enjoyed sharing, comparing and forming opinions around the shortlisted books and they eagerly anticipated and celebrated the announcement of winners and honour books.

Each library celebrated with feature displays, activities including:

  • Collaborative colouring to create display posters
  • Reviews and responses to the shortlisted books
  • Australian book movies on the TV during lunch
  • Jig saw puzzle challenges
  • Creating an “australian" story tree writing
  • Revisiting and discovering some iconic and classic children’s literature.

A particular highlight and culminating day of events was held on the 1 September for the Early and Junior Years students. The morning Book Character parade was followed with classroom literature activities and finally an opportunity to attend “Fair Dinkum” presented by Perform Educational Musicals. This performance incorporated some of the shortlisted books and a wonderful message about positive thinking. Parents, we would like to acknowledge the wonderful support and encouragement you provided through costume preparation and by joining us at the parade.

It was also Literacy and Numeracy Week and our celebrations and your parental involvement communicated that our college community values and celebrates literature and literacy. The Australian Literacy Educators Association posted for “10 literacy tips for parents” during Literacy and Numeracy Week and the first and second tips emphasised the importance of sending strong messages about the importance of books and visiting the library.|Primary_email|20160831
