Year 9 Camp Kokoda: The Abyss and Solo Challenges

This year, Year 9 students visited Camp Kokoda as part of the Rite Journey program, designed to help our students develop into young adults. Students engaged in a variety of activities and spent valuable time together as they successfully completed their Abyss and Solo challenges. It was a beautiful setting in which to reflect on the year thus far, and to take time out to appreciate nature, one another and our relationship with God and ourselves.

Students reflected on camp and posted these camp tweets on their return:

WOW! Sitting around the fire on our last night we had to create an ice cream based on our camp experience, it was interesting to listen to the various camp reflections. CAMP KOKODA was #AWESOME #CAMPKOKODA #FUN #BESTGROUPEVER #MISSEDMYPHONE xx

What an experience! From climbing steep hills to rock hopping, the time we had was well spent. Having such a great group to spend time with was a highlight. I would especially like to thank all the teachers for making this camp one of the best!

A challenging, fun, tough, long and educational experience. We pushed ourselves beyond our perceived limits and learnt new things. We bonded and tried new things. #rockhopping #9hourhike #bonding #navigators #alrightycampers #amazingexperience

Camp was phenomenal! I made new friends, was active and got fit. Thanks to our amazing group, I think I speak for everyone in saying that this was an incredible experience. We smashed the 4-hour solo challenge and I got to know myself better and laughed a lot!! 10/10 camp experience, I would definitely do it all again #nosocialmedia #solochallenge

The camp was an amazing experience. My group had the opportunity to jump off a ledge into freezing water! We had to cook and prep the food ourselves and we made one of the best meals I have ever tasted. Camp Kodoka was well run with fun instructors who helped us push upward and reach the top.

A place to lose or leave behind all your worries. Staying up till 3am watching the stars and rising above the pain and swelling in our feet. Making new friendships and experiencing the support from everyone at camp really made the camp experience so much better. Shedding laughs and tears with one another, we loved everything about this trip. Jumping into 3-degree water, leaving the city behind and enjoying the outback and nature at its finest.

In my opinion, the best four days of my life!
