An excited bunch of Year 5’s pulled out of the carpark early on March 17 headed to their favourite beach camp – Tallebudgera Leisure Centre. The enthusiasm was palpable as bags were loaded, hats were double-checked and seatbelts were clicked – Year 5 were on camp!
Arrival was swift and smooth. Cabin groups assigned, activity groups named and a quick tour of the camp facilities – including an amazing new ropes course opening soon. Then it was off to lunch and our first activity.
This year saw the introduction of a new activity – the Catapult. As a team we had to work together to construct a catapult and use a slingshot to hit a target…well, hopefully hit a target! While we had mixed success with the sling shot, we all enjoyed working as a team to meet this challenge. Other favourites were the giant swing (the view was so good Mrs Kennedy stayed up for a little longer), bodyboarding, rock-climbing, beach games and canoeing. All our instructors were knowledgeable, friendly but firm, and we felt safe in their capable hands.
The crazy weather was in our favour – a wet and wild Wednesday afternoon followed by blue skies and sunshine for the following two days. Lucky us got full use of the bodyboards and canoes and played team games on sunny sandy beaches. Mrs Rigby thought she was on vacation! The beauty of nature was not lost upon us as we paddled to secluded islands for a snack break or splashed around in the ocean waves.
Night times were fun too! On our first night Mr Gardner organised a Trivia Challenge, won by the formidable Alphas, and a slightly calmer night on Thursday saw us snuggled up watching “Wonder” our class novel this term. Admittedly some did sneak off to watch the opening games of the footy season too!
One of the best things about camp is the opportunity to work with different people. Everyone enjoyed pulling together in the giant swing, riding the waves in bodyboarding, and sharing meals in the dining room. Mixing with different people allows us to recognise the strengths and talents of others within our year group while facing challenges together. We showed kindness, empathy and bucketloads of team spirit…our 2021 Year 5s are amazing!
