Middle Years

Future Focused Learning

This term our Year 6 students participated in learning design known as R.A.L.E (Real-life Authentic Learning Experiences). It is an integration of subjects (from the National Curriculum), dependent on a focus problem or situation of study. The purpose of R.A.L.E is to increase student engagement with the curriculum in a real life way. As creators of the future, it is important for our students to realise elements of learning that both hinder and generate success, helping them to understand themselves as learners. The responsibility of each child was to collaboratively create and design a GC Trinity Adventure Guide(#GCTAG); in magazine form, advertising Gold Coast highlights.

The intention of this coffee table magazine is to celebrate the Gold Coast community on a global stage; given the higher influx of international visitors to the Gold Coast during the Commonwealth Games. Students were challenged to enhance their personal awareness of their own identity while establishing pride in their local culture, with respect to understanding and appreciating the community.Through this exploration and investigation students developed an awareness of the importance of respectful interactions on a local, national and international level.

Threading through the core of students at Trinity Lutheran College, are the values of respect, community, personal excellence and service. Developing an information service for international visitors has enabled our students to develop respectful collaborative relationships, raise community awareness, aim for academic excellence and provide a service without reward.

Our students had to research one of four areas: Cultural, Entertainment, Flora and Fauna, and Cuisine and part of their information gathering included an excursion to Twin Falls circuit and Goomoolahra Lookout, Springbrook, Surfers Paradise Entertainment experiences, Burleigh Headland and Aboriginal Cultural Centre and Cascade Gardens and Broadbeach Mall. We hope you enjoy reading the reflections of some of the students who visited Surfers Paradise and please look out for their amazing coffee table creations in the Mantra Hotels on the Gold Coast.

Our excursion was beneficial for my learning because we got to explore the Gold Coast and learn about facts and history and the attractions that this country has to offer. Today my new experience was visiting the sand sculptures and learning how they stand up and how they were created which was really interesting. I was frustrated when I had to walk with my heavy bag and I had to overcome that by not thinking about it and just keep walking.Ashtyn G

Our excursion was beneficial for my learning because I learned some great facts in Ripley's Believe It or Not as well as how to make a difference globally and how to present a magazine and a video. I was frustrated by having to carry my bag.Jack L

Our excursion was beneficial for my learning because I had fun while learning. Today my new experience was learning something new and being really interested in what I was learning about. I was frustrated when I did not understand the meaning of some sculptures in Ripley’s Believe it or Not because some words were hard to read. When I was frustrated I would ask for help and try again. Our excursion was beneficial for my learning because I learnt how a tourist would find different places, attractions and entertainment on the Gold Coast. My first photo was of the Southport Parklands, It has a lot of facilities for families to enjoy. Today my new experience was visiting Ripley’s Believe it or Not in Surfers Paradise. On our way to lunch we saw the Sand Safari Arts Festival which was amazing. I was frustrated when I realised I needed to use notes and then transfer my work to See Saw. I overcame my frustrations by putting my head down and working hard. What a fun day! Noah S

Our excursion was beneficial for my learning because I understood how my work will help the tourist that are coming to the Commonwealth games. Today my new experience was when I learned about how people shrink human heads.Cicio B
