Activity abounded as 80 excited Year 4 students and seven brave staff headed off for three days at Tyalgum Ridge Retreat. For some it was the first time away from home, others were seasoned professionals, but all were energetic, keen and ready for a challenge!
Tyalgum definitely did not disappoint in delivering those challenges! Tyalgum Ridge Retreat sits in the scenic rim and, bordered by five National Parks, provides a beautiful, natural setting for high and low rope courses, flying fox, canoeing, team games, camping skills, rock-hopping walks and a rainforest hike. We also had the opportunity to play with and feed baby farm animals. From the teamwork needed for initiative games to the bravery required for the high ropes course, every student faced the tasks with an open mind and a willingness to take a risk. Smiles, cheers and many group hugs rewarded the growth mindset shown by all the children as they both met, and exceeded expectations.
The staff at Tyalgum were warm, friendly, organised and experienced, sharing their knowledge and expertise, and extending our understandings in so many areas. We particularly loved the compassionate way they interacted with every student on an individual level. The daily delicious meals, tantalising morning and afternoon teas and the best breakfasts known to camp-kind soon assuaged any fears from fussy eaters.
Camp is an excellent way for students to move out of their comfort zones and explore new ideas. Our ‘Play is the Way’ life raft of “Pursue Your Personal Best, No Matter Who You Work With” was at the forefront as we experienced different activity, room and table groups. Our evening activities encouraged us to mix with others we usually do not get the opportunity to work with, sparking the growth of new friendships. The impeccable behaviour of all our students really impressed both Trinity and Tyalgum staff alike.
A light rain fell as we departed after lunch on Friday, echoing dampened moods as we left behind a beautiful experience but took with us warm memories and a readiness for more – look out Year 5 camp 2019!
