The theme for the much-loved annual Children's Book Week event in 2020 was ‘Curious Creatures, Wild Minds' and, during a year like no other and one that has entailed much change, the central role of our libraries to foster 'Wild and Curious' readers has remained steadfast. Even when we were hit with Covid-19 restrictions and online learning, borrowing limits from our libraries were“limitless”, on both campuses. Cotlew campus families visited for “open day” borrowing. After a squirt of sanitiser and with distancing in mind this service was highly valued and very well utilised; especially as our local and state libraries had closed their doors. Ashmore Road library too remained open for parents and student visitors to access library and textbook collections. Borrowing statistics went wild and all books have taken on a new shine with cleaning and quarantining each item on return!
Cotlew Campus library focused on developing the mindset of “Wild Readers” closely based on the work of Donalyn Miller. Wild readers make time to read and for many of us there was more time this year. Wild readers self-select good-fit books and we express gratitude that we have been able to continue to maintain up to date print and digital resources for our students on both campuses. Our high-quality digital subscriptions were critical during online learning. Wild readers make reading plans and share their reading experiences. Students were given these opportunities when they visited the library each week. Ashmore Road campus wild minds were encouraged too as students were inspired to read from all areas of the collection and create book trailers to promote their favourite discoveries.
Book Week celebrations were postponed this year due to Covid-19 so when we were able to have these celebrations last Friday, our Junior Years students and staff outdid themselves with their incredible costumes, celebrating books and the incredible privilege we have to be able to read them. Enjoy all the photos that so perfectly capture this awesome day.
