2018 Year 9 Camp at Camp Kokoda

Year 9 students attended Camp Kokoda at Maroon Dam for four days as part of our Rite Journey Program. On their return, they reflected on the wonderful experiences they shared on this journey together:

Camp Kokoda has been the best school camp experience I have had. It was absolutely fantastic. Our group of campers supported one another every step of the way and had a lot of fun together. Over the four days, we did abseiling, hiking, free fall, canoeing, the giant swing, flying fox, high ropes, and initiatives (involving teamwork).

This camp was one of the most difficult, yet most rewarding experiences I have ever had. We had to undergo many challenges, some of them simple, like cooking our own meals, others more intense challenges, like facing our fears. People who struggled had the guidance and encouragement of the rest of our group, and with that, they were able to complete and actually enjoy some of the challenges they faced. Sitting around the campfire playing games, sharing riddles and having some laughs with the group was amazing and made the camp experience extra special. Being away from technology made getting to know everyone so much more enjoyable. The best experience of camp was just spending time with my friends away from the regular routine. Camp taught me about my ability to face challenges and about others.

Whilst I did strengthen many of my relationships, one of the most important relationships I developed was with myself, especially during the Solo, which was part of our Rite Journey. When I undertook the Solo Challenge, I spent the time recognising and appreciating how much we have and how we do not always need to fill up all our free time. Whilst I was participating in my Solo and on our camp in general, I came to understand how grateful I should be for everything I have.

Something that I will leave behind is the fear that I am not able to do things, both mentally and physically. A fundamental life lesson I learnt, which will stay with me for years to come, is the fact that when we do get spare time in our busy lives, we should spend it reflecting and relaxing, rather than trying to fill it up with pointless things. I will take many wonderful memories away from this camp and I am so glad I was a part of this wonderful experience.

At Camp Kokoda, we had to overcome many challenges. Endurance, sacrifice, bravery and mateship were all qualities that we needed to show to make it through these unique experiences. Camp Kokoda gave us time to consider who we are as individuals and how well we work with a group of people we do not know very well. Our time at camp also made us realise how much we take for granted. Camp Kokoda has left me with valuable life lessons that I will not forget. I am grateful for this opportunity. Now I am really looking forward to Year 10 camp in 2019!
