2018 48km Kokoda Challenge

On Saturday, 14 July, four teams from Trinity participated in the 2018 48km Kokoda Challenge. In honour of the Kokoda Spirit, the 48km, 30km & 15km events wind through some of Brisbane's toughest terrain. These fifteen courageous students and their four leaders set out at 7am from Numinbah Valley Hall on a 48km trek that saw them climb steep hills up to Beechmont, then drop in to a valley and passing through the army’s Land Warfare Centre before again ascending the hills into Lower Beechmont Village, then descending again, via Hellfire Pass, to Clagiraba Reserve. From here, with just 18km of the 48km journey complete, we all thought we were on the run home but, alas, yet another hill stood in our way… Mt Nathan. This steep climb was not our last hill but what a relief to all when we finally reached the summit and headed on to some gentler ground before hitting the final leg through Nerang National Park. After more than 12 hours, and in the middle of a near freezing night (the temperature got to a low of 2 degrees C at Nerang, our teams started to arrive at the finish line. Congratulations to all involved, especially to Mr Breese and his team who were the first Trinity tam to complete the challenge. It truly is an epic, and life-changing experience for all involved and the Kokoda motto of “Mateship, Courage, Endurance, Sacrifice” certainly does match up very well with the words our students wore on their backs… “Rigour, Resilience, Respect.” We are already looking forward to 2019 when another large troop of students from Trinity will once again challenge themselves over the demanding course
